Vertical and horizontal scaling

Vertical scaling ('scale up') means adding more power to an existing server (a stronger processor, more memory), while horizontal scaling ('scale out') means adding more servers that share the load. Horizontal scaling better supports high availability because it removes a single point of failure, but it is more complex to manage.
