The CompTIA Network+ (N10-009) is the vendor neutral networking certification that sits in the middle of CompTIA's core three, between the A+ and the Security+. It certifies that you can explain how traffic moves, address and subnet a network, apply basic security to it, and diagnose it when something breaks. There is no prerequisite, so anyone can book it, and plenty of people take it as their first certification. This page is the map rather than the lesson: what the exam is, who it suits, what it costs, and which of our articles to read in what order. Where a question has a straight answer we give it, and where the honest answer is "you probably do not need this one", we say that too.

The exam at a glance

Two rows deserve a second look. The 720 pass mark is a higher bar than either A+ paper asks for, where Core 1 needs 675. And the suggested experience is exactly that: nobody checks it at the test center, and people pass without it every week.

Who should take it, and who should skip it

Take it if you are on a help desk and want the next rung, if the job listings you are actually applying to name it, or if you want a credential that is not tied to one manufacturer's hardware. It is also the natural networking entry under US Department of Defense qualification rules, where it maps to network operations and infrastructure support at the Basic level.

Skip it, or at least postpone it, in three cases. If you already configure enterprise networks for a living, the Network+ mostly certifies what your work history already proves. If you need a job this quarter and you are switching careers, entry level listings ask for the A+ far more often, which is the trade off we work through in do you need the A+ before the Network+. Network+ first, Security+ first, or straight to CCNA?

Network+ or Security+ first. CompTIA recommends Network+ level knowledge before the Security+, and it recommends it for a real reason: SY0-701 talks about segmentation, firewalls and traffic without stopping to explain what a subnet or a port is. But it is a recommendation, not a gate, and the Security+ voucher costs $439 against the Network+ at $399, so doing both is a genuine budget decision. The practical rule: if you can already explain what a VLAN does and read an IP address without thinking, go straight to Security+. Network+ or CCNA. The CCNA (200-301) covers overlapping ground but through Cisco's equipment and command line, and it goes deeper. It is also cheaper at list, around $300 before regional taxes, which surprises people, but the catch is study time rather than sticker price. Coming in cold, Network+ builds the vocabulary and the mental model first; committed network engineers with hands on experience can reasonably skip straight to Cisco. What is actually on the exam

Troubleshooting is the heaviest domain, which tells you what kind of exam this is: nearly a quarter of your score comes from diagnosing broken networks rather than defining terms, and the wrong answers are all things a real technician might try.

The hardest single topic is not a domain at all. Subnetting sits inside networking concepts, and it is where candidates lose their pacing, because it is arithmetic under a clock rather than recall. Drill it early and it turns into free time for the troubleshooting questions later in the paper. How long it takes

Your starting point decides this, and almost nothing else does.

• IT experience or a recent A+: 4 to 8 weeks. Roughly 40 to 60 focused hours, which at an hour a day is six to eight weeks.
• Informal networking exposure: 8 to 12 weeks. You have islands of knowledge, and the gaps tend to sit in dull places like cable standards.
• Starting from zero: 12 to 16 weeks. You are building a model of how networks work, not reviewing one.

What it really costs

The voucher is $399 after CompTIA's June 2026 price increase, and it buys exactly one attempt. Authorized resellers routinely list Network+ vouchers in the $350 to $365 range, and students should check academic pricing before paying anything at all. A realistic all in budget, with a discounted voucher, the free official objectives and one solid practice question bank, lands around $400 to $500.

The two line items people forget are the retake and the renewal. There are no free retakes, so a failed attempt costs another full voucher; there is no waiting period after a first fail, but later attempts sit 14 days apart.
