How to schedule your CompTIA exam, step by step

Every CompTIA exam is scheduled through Pearson VUE from your CompTIA account. Buy a voucher, log in, pick the exam, then choose a test center appointment or an online session. In-person appointments must be moved at least 24 hours ahead or the fee is forfeited; online sessions can be rescheduled any time before the start.
Booking the exam is the easiest part of certification, and somehow it still generates the most anxious questions. Fair enough: there is money on the line, two booking routes, and a rescheduling rule with a sharp edge. Here is the whole process in order, plus the two mistakes that actually cost people money.
Step 1: sort out payment
You can pay full price by card when you book, but almost nobody should. A voucher bought from CompTIA's store costs the list price, and the same voucher from an authorized reseller costs meaningfully less, a saving we broke down in our Security+ cost guide. Two rules about vouchers matter here. They expire 12 months after purchase, not after activation, so do not buy one for an exam you plan to sit in a year and a half. And your exam date must fall inside the voucher's validity window, because an expired voucher is money gone.
Stick to CompTIA or authorized resellers. Anyone selling suspiciously cheap vouchers, or promising leaked content from the live exam alongside them, is running a scam or a braindump operation, and both end badly.
Step 2: log in and pick the exam
Scheduling runs through your CompTIA account, which hands you over to Pearson VUE, the company that operates the testing itself. Create the account with your name exactly as it appears on your ID, because the two must match on exam day. From the account dashboard, choose Schedule and Manage Exams, pick your exam, and enter the voucher code as payment.

Step 3: choose test center or online
Pearson VUE offers the same exam two ways: in person at a test center, or online from home with a remote proctor watching through your webcam. The exam content and price are identical. A test center means travelling but nothing else to worry about; online means no travel but a strict setup, a clean desk, a room scan, and a system test you should run days in advance, not the morning of.
If in doubt, the test center is the boring, reliable choice. Whichever you pick, the appointment slots are real inventory: popular times fill up, so book a couple of weeks out rather than expecting a same-day seat.
Step 4: pick a date you will actually keep
The best scheduling advice has nothing to do with the software: book the exam before you feel completely ready. A date on the calendar converts vague studying into a countdown, and most people study more in the three weeks before a booked exam than in three unbooked months. The 24 hour rule
This is the sharp edge. An in-person appointment can be rescheduled or cancelled free of charge up to 24 hours before it starts. Inside 24 hours, or if you simply do not show up, the fee is forfeited and the voucher is spent. An online exam is gentler: you can reschedule or cancel any time before the start. Either way, rescheduling happens in the same place you booked, under your upcoming appointments.
So if you wake up sick, or panic, move the exam the moment the thought crosses your mind. Waiting until the evening before is how a $439 voucher becomes a receipt.
Exam day, briefly
Bring a valid government-issued photo ID matching the name on your account. At a test center, arrive early; the administrator will photograph you before testing, which is standard policy, not suspicion. Online, complete check-in early and have the room already cleared.
