Hash-based message authentication code (HMAC) HMAC

A mechanism that combines a hash function with a secret key in order to ensure both the integrity and the authenticity of a message at once. Unlike a plain hash that anyone can compute, a valid HMAC proves that the message was not altered by someone without the secret key.
