Authentication factors

The three basic factors are something you know (e.g. a password or PIN), something you have (e.g. a token or card) and something you are (e.g. a fingerprint or face). True multi-factor authentication combines factors from different categories, so a password plus a PIN is not true MFA because both are from the 'something you know' category.
