Core concepts

Preventive and detective controls

A preventive control stops an incident before it happens (e.g. a lock, wall, firewall), while a detective control discovers and records an incident while it is happening or after the fact (e.g. an alarm, CCTV, logs). The difference is that one stops the event and the other notices it.
