Data protection

Data states

Data exists in three states: at rest, in transit and in use, and a different protection is used for each. Data at rest is protected by disk or file encryption, data in transit by encrypting the traffic (TLS/VPN), while data in use is the hardest to protect because it must be decrypted in memory for the application to process it.
