Is CompTIA CySA+ worth it in 2026?

CySA+ is the certification people reach for once Security+ stops opening doors. That is the honest pitch, and it is also where the confusion starts, because the two exams now cost exactly the same and their marketing sounds almost identical. The difference is not difficulty for its own sake. Security+ asks whether you understand how attacks and controls work. CySA+ asks whether you can sit in front of a console at 2am, read what the tools are telling you, and decide what to do about it.

What the exam actually certifies

The current version is CS0-004, which replaced CS0-003 on 23 June 2026. It is built around the working day of a security operations analyst: monitoring and detection, vulnerability management, incident response and forensics, and the reporting that follows. The v4 refresh widened the cloud and hybrid coverage and added AI concepts, which reflects where most detection work has moved.

That focus is why the exam feels different even to people who passed Security+ comfortably. Security+ rewards recognising the right definition. CySA+ rewards interpreting evidence, and its scenarios tend to hand you output rather than a question.

The bill and the format

A voucher from CompTIA costs $439 in the United States, the same as Security+ since the June 2026 price rise across the whole lineup. Authorised resellers routinely sell the same voucher for less, which is worth ten minutes of searching before you book.

The exam gives you a maximum of 85 questions in 165 minutes, a mix of multiple choice and performance-based scenarios, and you pass at 750 on a scale that runs from 100 to 900. Where it pays off most clearly

The strongest case is defence work. CySA+ is an approved DoD 8140 baseline for the CSSP Analyst, CSSP Incident Responder and IAT Level II roles, which means it can be a hiring condition rather than a nice extra. Outside defence, the payoff is narrower but real. SOC analyst salaries in the United States average around $100,000, and CySA+ is one of the few vendor-neutral certifications that hiring managers read as "this person has worked tickets, not just watched videos". It will not create that experience, but it does document it.

Who should wait

CompTIA recommends Network+ and Security+ knowledge plus roughly four years of hands-on work as a SOC or incident response analyst. There is no enforced prerequisite, so nothing stops you booking it on day one, and people do. The result is usually an expensive lesson: the scenarios assume you have already triaged a real alert, and no amount of memorising helps you decide what a suspicious process tree means if you have never seen one.

A short verdict

Worth it if you are already in a security operations role, or if a job posting or contract names it. Worth planning for if you are one or two years into that work. Not worth it as a first certification, no matter how good the salary figures look, because the exam is written for someone who has already done the job for a while.
